Nappy Bank

The Nappy Bank gives parents a chance to try cloth nappies before they buy anything. Each kit contains a variety of nappy types and brands giving you a chance to see what you prefer and what works for you and has enough nappies and accessories for you to switch to cloth full time for the period of the loan. The bank is run by volunteers who have all used cloth with their children and are on hand to answer all your questions and talk you through the kit before you take it home.

All profits go back in the scheme, allowing it to grow to help more local parents.

How the Nappy Bank works

  • The Nappy Bank is operated by the Nottingham Branch of the NCT but there’s no need to be a member to use it.
  • Each kit contains at least 20 nappies plus nappy bucket and all the other bits and bobs you might need to use cloth nappies full time.
  • A washable wipes kit is also available for an extra £2.50. Borrowing the kit costs £20 for a two week loan.

Please email our volunteers at nottinghamnappybank@gmail.com for more information or to book a kit. Full terms and conditions may also be downloaded here.

Available to lend

Our current kits include:

Flat nappies (terries and prefolds), fitted nappies, pocket nappies, all-in-one nappies, all-in-two nappies, wraps, boosters, reusable wipes, nappy bucket, liners, nappy nippas, wet bag and bucket liners. Brands include Tots Bots, Close Parent, Smartipants, Fuzzi Bunz and Cheeky Wipes and all takings will be reinvested into expanding the service.

We also buy used nappies, so please get in touch if you have some you would like to pass on or donate to the scheme.

If you are looking to buy

The Nappy Bank is supported by Notts Bots Cloth Nappies who provide nappies and accessories for the scheme and also offer the following benefits for users of the nappy bank:
5% discount on all orders of nappies and accessories
£10 off a complete accessory kit if you buy 15 or more nappies

Please contact them on nappybankoffers@nottsbots.co.uk for more information and terms.
Cashback Schemes

Nottingham City, Nottingham County and Derbyshire County councils all provide cashback schemes offering £25 back when you spend £50 or more on cloth nappies. Please follow the links below for more information or to make a claim:

NCT Antenatal Courses - making friends for life?

I was speaking to a mum this week who had just been to the 18th birthday party of the eldest child born to her NCT antenatal group. The families have kept in touch for all this time, although they are now spread right across the UK, having met in London where they all worked 18 years ago and found themselves pregnant and needing information and support.

As an antenatal teacher, I love hearing that the groups I have taught go on to meet up after their babies have been born. Those early days can be quite a challenge and it's useful to have a friendly voice at the end at the phone who can reassure you that they are going through exactly the same thing, because their baby is almost exactly the same age as yours.

Sometimes groups go further than meeting for coffee - camping trips en masse, or weekends at Center Parcs, where the dads can all look after the babies whilst the mums go to the spa, or the mums babysit whilst the dads go off for a while.

Of course not all groups gel perfectly and whether you continue to meet up as a class group or not, you're welcome to come along to our Bumps and Babies in Beeston, Long Eaton, Hucknall and our soon-to-be-launched Stapleford Young Mums' group. That's how I made friends when I moved to Nottingham in 1998 with my 18 month old daughter - and I'm still in touch with several of the families I met there all those years ago, although we now tend to meet without the children who have very much developed busy teenage lives of their own.

To find out more about NCT courses and what's available use the NCT course finder. We look forward to meeting you.

Swish Event

On the 24th February 2012 we are organising a Swish in aid of our local baby cafe at Chilwell Road Methodist Church, Beeston, NG9 1EH.

The Swish event will begin at 6:30pm until 7.30pm when you are invited to drop off your items, please make sure all your items are labeled clearly with the size. You can bring up to ten items to be swapped, you will be given a token for ever item you bring. While you are waiting for the browsing to begin there will be plenty of tea, coffee and cakes. And arrange of stalls for you to browse and sample and don't forget our raffle.

At 7:45pm the browsing will begin, you are invited to have a look at the items, try them on in our back room but make sure you return them to the rails as you are not allowed to claim anything until the Swish begins.

At 8pm a whistle will be blown and the Swish will begin, and you can quickly grab which ever items you fancy. But no fighting if more than one of you want an item maybe you should toss a coin to decide.

Then it's over to the tills to cash your items out.

At the end of the Swish all remaining items will be donated to the NCT and sold for £2 with the money going to the baby cafe, if you do not wish your items to be sold you can collect items before this take place.

Don't forget to stay and see if you've won anything in our raffle.

Have you booked your NCT course yet?

The NCT has been offering antenatal classes in Nottingham for many, many years but recently the options available have expanded.

As well as the "traditional" evening courses, usually held as eight 2-hour classes, you can now book courses that take place at weekends e.g two consecutive Saturdays or Sundays, six Saturday afternoons or Sunday evenings.

Most of our antenatal courses are attended by couples expecting their first baby but sometimes we have couples who are expecting their second or subsequent child and didn't do classes the first time around and whilst they are very welcome on these courses, there's another option - refresher courses. Lasting just one day, these are aimed at parents who have been through labour and/or birth at least once already and want to use their experience to help with their next labour.

We are now also able to offer postnatal courses, which are held on weekdays and attended by parent and baby. These courses give you the opportunity to explore different approaches to important parenting issues with a qualified group leader and other new parents in your area.

Coming soon - look out for our Baby First Aid courses which we are running in conjunction with British Red Cross. These are designed to build your confidence as a parent or carer in dealing with emergency situations.

Our Facebook page is updated regularly with infomation about Nottingham NCT and the services we offer including our Nearly New Sales, Bumps and Babies groups, BabyCafe breastfeeding support and social and fundraising events, such as the forthcoming Swish, which will give you the opportunity to update your wardrobe by swapping your unwanted clothes and accessories with someone else. "Like" us if you are on Facebook, and if you aren't, bookmark it so you can check it regularly; it's open to public viewing. You can find out what courses are available on our website.

I hope we will see you at one of our courses or events during 2012. If you'd like to know more, please feel free to drop me a line or call/text me on 07711 956779.
