We're holding a Swish event!

The Nottingham Branch of the National Childbirth Trust are planning to hold a Swish to raise vital funds to continue our support of the Baby Cafe at the Chilwell Surestart children’s centre.

A swish event is where you bring any unwanted clothes, bags or accessories that you no longer want or fit and swap them with other like minded people! You might bring a jumper and leave with a fabulous pair of shoes. Or you may bring a handbag and leave with a gorgeous pair of jeans. A fantastic way to update your wardrobe!

So save unwanted items for our Swish event coming in the new year!

“The latest craze sweeping the country is ethical, eco-fabulous, social and fun. Welcome to the future of fashion."

Jess Cartner-Morley, Marie Claire

Cheque Guarantee Cards

You will be aware that cheque guarantee cards will no longer guarantee cheques from 30th June 2011.

As some people might still wish to pay by this method at our sales we would appreciate another form of ID being presented at the till (such as photo driving licence or Passport), as well as your address being put on the back of the cheque.

NCT's finance manager has been representing the charity on sector consultations with the UK Payments Council over cheque guarantee cards and cheques themselves, which are due to be phased out in 2018. We will continue to investigate alternative payment options and appreciate your understanding and patience during this transition phase.; [original article]

West Bridgford Nearly New Sale looking good!

I've just received the news that we have only one seller slot left for our first West Bridgford Nearly New Sale which is due to take place at The Becket School on Saturday 16 July.

This is fantastic news and means the sale will certainly be on a scale we are used to seeing at our other venues in Mapperley and formerly Long Eaton and Bramcote.

For information on Nearly New Sales generally have a look at the NCT website; For information on the West Bridgford Sale, check our Facebook events page.

For the German speakers amongst you - Deutschsprachige Eltern-Kind Gruppe – Nottingham

Although this isn't an NCT group, several of those who attend have met at NCT classes or Bumps & Babies groups.

Membership secretary required - can you help?

Following the resignation of our membership secretary who has been in post for a number of years, Nottingham branch is seeking a replacement volunteer.

Although we are the biggest branch in the area, the job need not take up a lot of your time.

This is an essential post which we are required to fill to allow the branch to remain open. If you can help, please call/text me on 07711 956779 or leave a comment on our Facebook page and one of us will get in touch.

Bingham Nearly New Sale - volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to help run our Bingham Nearly New Sale which takes place on the 9 April between 12noon and 4pm.

As this is a table top sale a lot of the setting up is done by the stallholders but we need people to do the following:

- take entry fees on the door
- sell drinks and cakes
- hand out flyers on the exit

In return you get a warm fuzzy feeling and, probably more importantly, first chance to look around the sale and grab some bargains.

Please contact Claire on nctnottingham@yahoo.com if you can help.; [original article]

Exercise during pregnancy and after birth – are you managing to get any?

Having read a recent article – explained below - I am prompted to ask local mums what they have found in the Nottingham and Derby areas to help them keep fit during pregnancy and after the baby has arrived, or how they manage to incorporate exercise, or time for them, into their daily life. Post your experiences on here or let us know what’s stopping you.

Why am I asking? The NCT’s professional journal “New Digest” has published an article this quarter introducing the NICE guidance on weight management and the impact of weight gain during pregnancy. Alongside it appears a survey conducted by an NCT member, Jo Edwards, who asked mums in her area what had made it difficult for them to exercise since having a baby and what had helped.

Mums reported that the following were barriers to postnatal exercise:

- cost and availability of gyms and classes
- cost and availability of good childcare or crèche
- postnatal health problem e.g. pelvic floor and sore joints

Some mums had managed to overcome the barriers by:

- joining pram pushing classes,
- joining walking groups
- walking on as many journeys as possible,
- cycling to work,
- sharing a personal trainer/instructor with a friend so one could exercise whilst the other exercised
- getting together with their NCT group at the swimming baths and taking turns to swim/look after the baby
- waiting until partners arrived home
- using a postnatal-specific exercise DVD

The new NICE guidelines incorporate the recommendation that a range of activities should be offered by local authorities and that these should be affordable and available at times which suit those with babies and those with older children. They should also offer childcare facilities and provision for breastfeeding.

So what works for you? Do you find local authorities offer good provision here, or have you found better elsewhere offered by other practitioners, gyms, etc?
